Common landscape video resolutions and dimensions
Resolution is the number of pixels across and down a video frame. The labels below describe common 16:9 landscape dimensions.
| Label | Landscape dimensions |
|---|
| 360p | 640 × 360 pixels |
| 480p | 854 × 480 pixels |
| 720p | 1280 × 720 pixels |
| 1080p | 1920 × 1080 pixels |
| 1440p | 2560 × 1440 pixels |
| 4K UHD / 2160p | 3840 × 2160 pixels |
The same label can be used with a different aspect ratio. A vertical 1080p video is commonly 1080 × 1920 pixels rather than 1920 × 1080.
360p and 480p dimensions
A standard 360p frame is 640 × 360 pixels, while 480p is commonly 854 × 480 pixels. Both suit smaller displays and limited storage, although text and wide shots can appear soft at 360p.
720p dimensions and everyday use
A standard 720p frame is 1280 × 720 pixels. It is often a practical balance for phones, tablets and laptops, but its file size still depends on bitrate, codec, frame rate and duration.
1080p dimensions when detail matters
A standard 1080p landscape frame is 1920 × 1080 pixels. It suits desktop viewing, presentations and footage containing small text, but normally needs more data than 720p.
1440p and 4K dimensions
A standard 1440p frame is 2560 × 1440 pixels. 4K UHD, also called 2160p, is 3840 × 2160 pixels. These resolutions preserve more detail on large displays but can require much larger files.
Frame rate matters too
A 60 fps stream can look smoother than a 30 fps stream during games, sports and fast movement. It may also be larger. Vyroli shows frame rate beside a resolution when the source reports it.
Landscape, vertical video and aspect ratio
Resolution describes pixel dimensions, while aspect ratio describes the frame's shape. A 16:9 landscape video may be 1920 × 1080, while a 9:16 vertical video commonly reverses those dimensions to 1080 × 1920.
How resolution affects file size
More pixels can require a higher bitrate to preserve detail, but resolution alone does not determine size. Codec efficiency, frame rate, motion, audio and encoder settings all matter. Use the video file-size calculator to estimate storage from bitrate and duration.
Helpful things to remember
Choosing the best YouTube video quality is easier when you match the resolution to your screen. A phone rarely needs the same file size as a large television, and a spoken presentation may not benefit from 4K picture quality.
Vyroli shows the resolutions found for each video, including common options such as 360p, 480p, 720p and 1080p. If a quality is not listed, it was not available for that particular link.
